Heirloom Sewing

March 14, 2009

I am about to start a new adventure – learning Heirloom Sewing. I’ve wanted to do this for Years…and now I finally am. I’ve collected my supplies –

I have this book – (it’s linked to the place you can buy it)

I’ve also purchased fabric, needles and thread from Fine Stitchery and some iron-on dots for smocking…phew! Barbara is awesome to email with, and she had great things at fabulous prices in her store.

Not sure what I’m going to tackle first, but I’ll let you know!

Rock Hero and Guitar Band

February 9, 2009

Yes I know it’s wrong 🙂 You know how you get words mixed up? I was telling someone we got Rock Band and Guitar Hero for Riley for Christmas and that’s the way it came out. So embarrassing and so funny at the same time.

It never seemed to me that I’d be playing these games, but I am and it’s a lot of fun! Our living room looks like backstage at a rock concert with about 4 guitars, the set of drums, the microphone, the ‘equipment’. But what the heck. We live here, it’s not a magazine living room 🙂

I can usually play bass on medium and guitar on easy. I don’t play enough to get better at it. But Mike and I and Riley have formed our own band. While it’s fun to play… it’s also fun to SHOP! Last night, I had enough money to buy some new clothes, so I went and bought stuff. When it came time to buy shoes, I said they had to be heels – since that’s not something I can wear in real life. bought myself some kicky boots and boy do I look hot! lol…. on screen! 🙂

I made another outfit for my AG doll. This will be donated to the CFAC store, to raise money for the propane fund. I love to make doll clothes – they don’t take very much fabric, and it’s a great way to practice new techniques and just have fun. Who doesn’t love to play dolls? 🙂

Couture Sewing

January 28, 2009

A while back, before Christmas, I bought Claire Schaeffers book, Couture Sewing Techniques. I’ve read a lot of it, but oh the fun of using those techniques!!!!

I’m making a jumper – that I designed with my new pattern software 🙂 – and am sewing it completely using couture techniques. Which means… by hand. 🙂 I’m completely surprised at how fast it is going!

I’m including pictures of the facings. I cut my own, didn’t really get the hang of making the shoulders the same width, but I’ll for sure remember next time.

Doing facings ‘couture’ is completely different than what they taught us in 4-H! 🙂 They also turn out wonderful and I love it. My nearest sewing friend is 3 hours away, but I was so excited by how my facings were turning out I dragged Mike in here. He tried his best to be happy for me, but didn’t really ‘get it’. “Honey, I don’t even know what a facing is!!!!” he said, apologetically. But he was happy none-the-less, mostly because I was 🙂

I’m also sewing for my American Doll… couture! These are not your childrens doll clothes!

this is her shift, her undergarment for those of you not up on clothing terms of the 1800’s 🙂 Completely sewn by hand, with silk thread, all seams nicely finished. Next… a dress. For her.

This is really a lot of fun. I haven’t been able to find any other couture sewing groups though. I’m sure you’re out there. I’d love to have someone to talk couture with… anyone?

have a happy week and stay warm 🙂 karen
